Robert O’Leary, a team leader in the Michigan Assembly Plant (MAP) Body Department, seems to have a knack for recognizing and eliminating waste.
When Robert and his team were struggling to meet budget because of the cost of protective decklid sponges, he worked with the Plant Vehicle Team and Quality to run a controlled trial without the padding to determine their effectiveness.
The test revealed that the sponges, which cost $1.50 each, were not needed. The protective padding was eliminated, saving Michigan Assembly thousands of dollars without compromising quality.
“Placement and removal of the decklid sponges added work for people on the line, cost the company money and didn’t need to be used. So, it made sense to eliminate them,” O’Leary explained.
It’s not the first time O’Leary saw an opportunity to attack waste. He was also instrumental in eliminating a liftgate sponge as well as a rubber door strip. Both proved to be unnecessary protection.
“Robert is a great example of an employee who goes further and is fully engaged in our business,” said Corey Williams, area manager, MAP Body Department. He wants to build a world-class product for our customers, yet also understands the negative impact of waste.”
