FPS: Global Ford Production System Introduction

DATE: Will be calculated from "Release Start Date" field.

FPS is making its mark here at Dearborn Diversified Manufacturing and throughout Ford Motor Company.  But what exactly is FPS?  FPS or Ford Production Systems is a global, operating system designed to insure uniformity across all Ford plants worldwide.  As Ford Motor Company started to open more facilities across different countries, it became obvious that no-one operated under one standard.  A plant in China might handle the same task completely opposite to the way it was handled in North America, creating problems across platforms.  European, Asian, and North American variance of standards and practices was creating massive headaches as Ford moved further into global operations.  FPS was created to alleviate those issues, and to improve the efficiency of our manufacturing operations.

Technically defined, FPS is a Manufacturing strategic approach that includes the right Leadership Behaviors, Operating Systems and Key Unifying Processes supported by an Aligned and Capable Organization to deliver Best in World Results.

•    Standardized Global Approach of Systems, Standards and Processes that is all inclusive
•    Model that drives from process inputs to output metrics that delivers stability and root cause analysis – linked to standardized leadership language
•    Clear Roles and Responsibilities at each level
•    Model for team types that ensure ownership of the Process and of Safety, Quality and Flow
•    Integrated, Structured Process with Cadenced Activities and Meetings every day through Time and Data Management at each level
•    Activities and Meetings that structure the interaction to promote ownership, highlighting of issues and driving Continuous Improvement
•    Leaders as Teachers that engages and motivates people in the process and achieves sustainability as well as continuous improvement
•    Becomes “The Way” we operate our plants to deliver “Best in World Results”

Essentially, Ford management has realized that the job operators are really the experts regarding our daily jobs and tasks, and has now given us the means to leverage their input. Ideally improvements and innovations that were previously ignored can now be easily considered for use in our processes.  One of the key driving forces of FPS is giving control to the teams and coordinators to initiate changes, eliminating some of the layers of delay and indifference that had plagued previous improvement models.
