CHICAGO - Two years ago, the Chicago Stamping Plant Diversity Team created a new campaign, "Bring Your Work to Your Family." The goal of the campaign, a play on "Bring Your Kids to Work Day," was to address the common thread among manufacturing employees – family. Employees working in manufacturing seldom have the opportunity to share their work with their families, except through stories. The Diversity Team wanted their families to know and understand how much they are valued.
First, the Diversity Team spent countless hours creating a book called The ABCs of the Chicago Stamping Plant, which is currently in production. The book covers all aspects of the plant from A-Z (i.e. A is for Administrative Assistant, Accountant; B is for Blanker, Baler Operator; C is for Chaplain, Carpenter, Computer Technician). It has family recipes, family trees, historical facts, tons of pictures and community service information. There also is an article on Harold Michalak, the longest longest-tenured UAW employee at Ford at the time before he retired in 2012.
The team is placing the books on a jump drive to show how the Diversity Committee is “green.” A select number of printed books will be for sale and profits will be utilized to support future diversity activities for the plant. They are very excited to have completed this worthy project and publish the results to their employees and Ford. Everyone is excited to bring the books home to their families and share their Ford family legacies.
The Diversity Team also planned a Family Fun Day and Open House that allowed Ford families an opportunity to walk through their loved ones work place; something that most have never been able to do. A plant tour, monster truck and motor cross exhibitions, old and new vehicle displays, kid’s fun area, demonstrations and musical entertainment were all a part of this fantastic event.
The Diversity Team's mission is to focus on community involvement, worklife balance, improving morale, diversity-related education and establishing a positive image for Chicago Stamping Plant employees. Through their extraordinary effort, this team touched on every part of their mission statement.
This group of hourly and salaried employees worked as One Team to deliver on their mission statement. They took the team concept to a higher level through building strong relationships, being team players, having a “can do” attitude and enjoying the journey with each other. The outcome could be a contributing factor to an increase in participation in the hourly pulse and Employee Satisfaction Index (ESI) score. The hourly ESI improved to 41.6 percent, up from 36 percent in 2012, which was considered statistically Extremely Significant. The Salaried Pulse ESI also improved to 75 percent, up from 69 percent in 2012.
The Chicago Stamping Plant Diversity Team exemplifies why the UAW and Ford jointly agree to incorporate these groups into our structure. They encourage diversity though valuing every employee as individuals. They go out of their way to utilize their collective resources to show that although there are so many different backgrounds, cultures, ages, religions and beliefs; they truly care and value our employees.
Their team-oriented mindset sets an example that through the extraordinary acts of a few, great things can happen. Promoting positive work-life balance through sharing our Ford world by way of the ABC book and Family Fun Day/Open House is just the start of what this team plans to contribute to Ford Motor Company.
