 100th Anniversary of the Moving Assembly Line

Today, Ford celebrates the 100th anniversary of an innovation that has had a great impact on manufacturing, industry and society as a whole: the moving assembly line.  In celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the moving assembly line, we thought it’d be nice to take a look back at the history of Cleveland Engine Plants.

Plant Facts

  • Began operations September, 1951
  • Size:  1,200,000 square feet
  • Average employment (circa 1957): 4500
  • In 1977-1978, a massive expansion program increased annual 302 capacity from 864,000 to 1.4 million units.  The expansion included new machining lines, an indexing assembly line and a fully-automated hot test area.

  • 1951-1953: 215 cid 6-cylinder (Ford Motor Company's first overhead-valve engine)
  • 1953-1956: 223 cid 6-cylinder (replacement for the 215)
  • 1953-1955: 256/272 cid V-8 (Mercury)
  • 1955-1960: 292/312 cid V-8
  • 1957-1959: 352/361 cid 6-cylinder (Edsel)
  • 1960-1961: plant shut down for retooling
  • 1961-1967: 221/260/289 cid V-8
  • 1964-1974: 240/300 cid I-6
  • 1967-?: 302 cid V-8 (expanded to a second production line in 1978)  (electronic fuel injection added in 1985)
  • 1974-1997: 300 cid I-6 (electronic fuel injection added in 1986)

  • Original size: 862,000 square feet
  • Current size: 1,445,000 square feet
  • Average employment (circa 1957): 3000
  • Current total employment: 813
  • Production (in 1959): 1,019,557 engines
  • Production (in 1977): 1,866,000 engines
  • A $100 million expansion in 1967-1969 added 510,000 square feet of floor space.
